The Mobile Stack

The Mobile Stack

The range of new computing devices including the laptop, the netbook, the smart phone and the tablet that will soon likely make the desktop obsolete.

The famous misquote: "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." by Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943, may well turn out to be true in the coming decades.

OS

The Rise of the Wireless Protocols

Wireless protocols are evolving at a rapid pace with 3G networks providing high speed data access that matches broadband speeds.

4G is not too far away and service providers and devices are scrambling to keep pace with their offerings.

OS

The diversity of platforms

The year 2010 saw the rapid rise of the Google Android operating system, overshadowing the rise of the more trendy iOS from Apple. The Blackberry OS is slated to take some of the marketshare in 2011.

The other main contender, Microsoft Windows Phone 7 OS is also rapidly making strides. Microsoft and Nokia are now working on an alliance, which will mean that Nokia will be redefining its MeeGo strategy.

Devices

Communication or Computation

Factors that will influence a tablets popularity include: Price, Screen Size and Quality, Number of Apps on the Platform, Weight, Performance and Battery Life

Will the trend be similar to that with Personal Computers? Apple with its amazing UX and proprietary platform on one side and Google Android and Windows Phone 7 on the other side with a whole lot of devices from global and local players.

Industries

Adoption by Industry Vertical

Although there are no clear trend setters yet in terms of industry verticals that have successfully implemented an enterprise mobile strategy, there are some front-runners.

We believe that consumer-facing industries such as retail, health care, hospitality, travel and education will pioneer B2C apps, followed by banks once transactional security concerns abate. Enterprise apps such as CxO dashboards, loan application submission, on-field data gathering and machine-to-machine apps will soon follow.
